Latinos in Action Colorado Teacher of the Year

Adams 12 Five Star Schools is proud to offer Latinos in Action at Stem LaunchNorthglenn Middle School and Thornton Middle School. Latinos in Action is a non-profit organization that works to empower Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. Adams 12 Five Star Schools was the first district in Colorado to offer Latinos in Action and it has been a success for our district and our students. These schools also spend one day a week in neighboring Federal Heights Elementary, Thornton Elementary and Stem Launch K-5 tutoring and mentoring our elementary students.

Recently, Latinos in Action hosted its first ever student leadership conference at CU Boulder in partnership with the Bueno Center. At closing ceremonies, the Five Star District received special recognition:

  • Latinos in Action Colorado Teacher of the Year: Kathy Smith, Teacher at STEM Launch K-8
  • Rookie Teacher of the Year: Brenda Ortiz Torres, Teacher at Thornton Middle School
  • Rookie School of the Year: Thornton Middle School
  • Bronze Award for Active Engagement: Northglenn Middle School and Teacher Helen Song

Congratulations to these teachers and schools! Thank you Kathy, Brenda, and Helen for making Latinos in Action possible for our students. This incredible opportunity is making a positive impact in their lives, in that of your schools and in our district as a whole. Muchas gracias!
